The CogAT Aptitude: the ability to develop skills or acquire knowledge Measures general thinking and problem-solving skills and indicates how well the student uses these skills to solve verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal problems These abilities are closely related to an individual’s success in school, so test results may be used in planning effective instructional programs
The CogAT Three sections: Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal. Scores from these three sections yield a composite score. Verbal: associated with Language Arts; measures verbal reasoning abilities such as comprehension and higher level thinking skills Quantitative: associated with Math; measures reasoning skills and various strategies with problem solving Nonverbal: problem solving and higher level thinking that use only geometric shapes and figures and require no reading and no background knowledge
After the CogAT… Teachers evaluate to look for learning needs of students Performance is compared to that of other students in the same age group, not their grade level If a child scores 85% or higher, they will be further evaluated using the ITBS to determine if there is a need for AIG services 85% can be their composite score or in one area
Reading, Mathematics, and Critical Thinking The ITBS Achievement: acquired learning Three areas are measured: Reading, Mathematics, and Critical Thinking The critical thinking questions are integrated into the Reading and Math sections
What Happens Next? Scores will be discussed in detail later, but students must score at least 92% on both tests to be eligible for AIG services If there are scores to indicate a need for AIG services, other factors will be considered to determine the needs of the student Students will not be identified until the end of the school year
