Biological Molecules B2, B3, B4. Water and It’s role in biological Systems  describe how the polarity of the water molecule results in hydrogen bonding.
Water Basics Polar: part of the molecule is slightly positive… other part slightly negative – Oxygen (-) – Hydrogen (+) Oxygen “hogs” hydrogen electrons.

Presentation transcript:

Properties of Water Liquid at most temperatures on earth Expands as it cools Covers 75% of earth Makes up 60% of human body cells Dissolves more things than any other liquid – Universal Solvent Necessary for chemical reactions in living things O side is negative and the H side is +.

Polar: Has a + and a – side Breaks apart into charged particles called ions

- + Water – H2O H+ and OH- ions are produced when bonds break O Negative side + Positive side H+ and OH- ions are produced when bonds break

Water is the Universal Solvent

Ex: Kool-aid Solute is? Solvent is?

Acids vs Bases: pH Acid: Excess of H+ ions in solution Base: Excess of OH- ions in solution pH: A scale used to measure how acidic or basic a solution is (percent H+)

pH Scale 7 14 Living things prefer Neutral pH Neutral High H+ Acid 7 14 Neutral High H+ Acid High OH- Basic Living things prefer Neutral pH
