Cells and Heredity Section 1 The Cell

Section 1.1 The cell is the basic unit of all living things Organisms are any individual forms of life that use energy to carry out daily activities. Human Plants Insects

Characteristics of Life Organization The ability to develop and grow The ability to respond to the environment The ability to reproduce.

Needs of Life Energy (food) Materials (oxygen, water) Living space (house, open land)

Organization The structure of all living things (Bactria, animals, and plants) have a body that has organization. The smallest unit of organization that can perform all life processes is called a cell.

Cell theory- Every living thing is made of one or more cells. Cells carry out the functions needed to support life. Cells come only from other living cells

Two types of Cells Prokaryotic Cells – bacteria and other single celled organisms a. Has only a single loop of DNA (that is not membrane bound), ribosomes and enzymes that are in cytoplasm b. Have a cell wall around the cell membrane, some also have a capsule that allows them to cling to things

All living things are made of cells Unicellular organisms are made of a single cell. Why is this a unicellular organism?

Two types of Cells Eukaryotic Cells – are in organisms that are made up of one or more cells a. They are more complex so they can carry out more specialized functions than prokaryotic cells b. Two different types: plant and animal cells

Multicellular organisms are made of many cells. What makes humans multicellular organisms?

Pasteur Louis Pasteur did research that showed that cells came only from other cells and did not spontaneously generate from nonliving materials. He also developed a way to make food and drinks safer by pasteurizing them, or killing off harmful bacteria with heat.

The microscope led to the discovery of cells. Microscope is an instrument that makes an object appear bigger than it is.

Bacteria Bacteria singled cell organisms that sometimes lead to sickness or disease.

Exit Ticket What are the 4 characteristics of life? What are 2 reasons Pasteur is famous? What is cell theory? What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular organisms?
