What is an ATOM? Definition: An atom the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element Humans, books, desks, cars, are all collections of atoms!  Without atoms, we would not exist…..there would just be empty space!

Atoms are made up of 3 different parts: 1. Protons have positive charge (+)  Located in the center of an atom (called the nucleus) 2. Neutrons have zero (neutral) charge  Also located in the center of an atom (the other half of the nucleus)

Atoms are made up of 3 different parts: 3. Electrons have negative charge (-)  Tiny part that fly around in “orbits” around the nucleus Protons & Neutrons together form the Nucleus of an atom! >99.9% of mass

What is a Compound? Hydrogen and Oxygen!  H2O Definition: When two or more atoms combine together, they make a particle called a compound For example, a molecule of water is a combination of 2 different atoms. Does anyone know what two atoms? Hydrogen and Oxygen!  H2O

The Human Body is 70% water  You’re full of water molecules!! Your brains are 75-85% water!

An ESSENTIAL ELEMENT There are 15 essential elements to all animals and plants, these include: Hydrogen(H) Potassium (K) Carbon (C) Calcium (Ca) Nitrogen (N)   Manganese (Mn) Oxygen (O) Iron (Fe) Sodium (Na) Copper (Cu) Magnesium(Mg)          Zinc (Zn) Phosphorus(P) Selenium (Se) Sulfur(S) Chlorine (Cl)
