Equations Systems

Solving Systems Systems of Equations are when you have a variable on both sides of the equal sign. For example… 3x – 5 = 6x + 4 When this happens, it is best to move everything to one side of the equation by SUBTRACTING! Hint: always move the side with the smaller variable. For example… 3x – 5 = 6x + 4 -(3x – 5) -(3x – 5) **Always be sure to line-up like terms. 0 = 3x + 9 Now that the variables are on one side, solve the equation normally.

Practice 5x – 3 = 2x + 9 -(2x + 9) Move the smaller variable expression 3x – 12 = 0 Solve equation x = 4 6x + 11 = 3 – 2x -(-2x + 3) Move smaller variable expression 8x + 8 = 0 Solve equation x = -1 -4 – (-3x) = -2x + 6 -4 + 3x = -2x + 6 Simplify problem (KCC) -(6 – 2x) Move smaller variable expression -10 + 5x = 0 Solve equation x = 2 Practice in notes: pg. 180, #s 11-19
