The Behavior of Waves 12/5/13

Reflection Occurs when a wave strikes and object and bounces off All wave types reflect Examples: Seeing yourself in the mirror, echoes

Law of Reflection The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection

Refraction The bending of a wave caused by a change in speed as it moves from one medium to another Reminder: wave speed depends on the medium!

Refraction cont… Wave bends away from the “normal” when it speeds up Ex) Water to air Wave bends toward the “normal” when it slows down Ex) Air to water

Different waves bend different amounts because speed depends on wavelength!

Diffraction Occurs when an object causes a wave to change direction and bend around it Amount depends on size of obstacle compared to wavelength Example: hearing around corners

Diffraction Types Can occur when going through a slit Can occur when going around an object
