Belief and Devotion High Middle Ages

The Catholic Church During the Middle ages most people belonged to the Catholic church. The head of the church is called the Pope. People had to attend church every Sunday. The sermon was done in Latin so most people didn’t understand. Church was supposed to look after the poor (as a sanctuary where people could be safe)

Religion creates hope Life was so difficult that people found hope for a better life only through their religion. The church was powerful and the Pope ruled a large territory in Italy called the Papal states (Rome) People believed that everything in their life was controlled by religion. Every village had a church and a priest to conduct religious ceremonies

Wealth and the Roman Catholic Church People were expected to give 1/10 of their income to the church (tithe) The Roman Catholic church became very rich because it owned lots of land and received money and crops from all people. The Catholic church became corrupt and many monarchs resented the power of the church.

People of the Church Some people, known as monks and nuns, devoted their whole lives to church. Monks and nuns lived simple lives and helped spread Christianity across Europe.
