Lewis Structures Lesson Three

Lewis Structure Lewis structures of molecules show how atoms are bonded Let’s work through this tutorial first to learn a technique, then you will be allowed to work in groups to solve more problems Tutorial: Tutorial Group work: Complete five Lewis structures from this tutorial to hand in: Independent Work

Summary Steps to create a Lewis Structure: 1. count the number of valence electrons 2. least electronegative atom is placed in the middle 3. set up a skeleton of the structure 4. draw a single bond in between each atom 5. count the amount of valence electrons left 6. make each atom have an octet, remembering the rules of single, double, triple, and lone pairs 7. count the number of electrons in your final product to ensure you’ve drawn a correct structure

Homework With a partner or group, create a movie in windows movie maker for an assigned Lewis structure Groups can have no more than four people Be as CLEAR and creative as possible Feel free to add sound through the movie program Example: HCO3- You do not need to be as specific, but make sure that you’ve explained how to create your Lewis structure
