OUTLINING THE US CONSTITUTION

Wednesday November 30th 2016. Pick up your spirals/folders, take out a pen/pencil and your bellwork. You will have 10 minutes to complete Article 2 and then we will grade. You will complete the notes for Articles 3 – 7 with your shoulder partner. Then you will do Articles 3 – 7 worksheet, due tomorrow first thing. Bellwork: What do you think? What are you supposed to do when you enter the classroom? What are you supposed to do when others are talking, especially ANY teacher?

Article 3 – The Judicial Branch The Supreme Court Establishes the Supreme Court and inferior federal courts. Main job: interpret the law

Article III: Judicial Branch Continued… Term of Office Federal judges serve for life. Can be impeached by Congress (like the President).

Article III: Judicial Branch Continued… Judicial Review The Supreme Court has the power to declare laws unconstitutional. Established in 1803 by Chief Justice John Marshall during the case of Marbury vs. Madison. Must have a real case involving real people in order to declare a law unconstitutional.

Article 4 – Relations Among States All states will respect the laws and citizens of the other states.

Article 5 – Amending the Constitution Amend – to change or add to the Constitution. Amendments must be proposed then ratified. An amendment can be proposed by: 2/3 vote of both houses of Congress OR 2/3 of state legislatures (state Congress).  

Article 5 – Amending Continued… An amendment can be ratified by: 3/4 approval of state legislatures OR 3/4 approval at state conventions.

Article 6 – Supremacy of the National Government The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land. All government officials must take an oath to support the Constitution. No person can be denied public office because of their religion.

Article 7 – Ratification Signed by the delegates in September 1787. 3/4 of the states must ratify the Constitution in order for it to become law. New Hampshire became the 9th state to ratify in 1788. All 13 states eventually ratify.
