Sordaria Genetics Activity

Sordaria Life Cycle

Sordaria Reproduction & Genetics Haploid for most of the life cycle & exists in a mass called the mycelium (“body” of fungus) Ascospores (haploid)  mycelium  forms fungal filaments (hyphae)  2 hyphae fuse (diploid zygote)  meiosis  ascospores Spore color gene: black or tan Cross: black (wild-type) X tan (mutant) Calculate distance from spore color gene to centromere

Noncrossover Asci

Crossover Asci

Calculating Color Gene to Centromere Distance # Noncrossover Asci # Crossover Asci Total # Asci Calculate recombination frequency # crossovers/ total # Corrected value: % recombination ÷ 2 Map distance from gene to centromere Mitosis event after meiosis  2 asci formed

Analysis Published results: 26 map units
