Text Features that writers use!! Reading Strategy one: Text Features: Fiction and Non-Fiction

What is A Text FEATURE? Text features help readers help you understand what is important in the piece of writing you are reading. Without text features it would be much more difficult for you to understand some passages of writing and even miss the meaning of what was written. There are a number of text features here at a few as seen below: Captions: Help you better understand a picture or photograph “Man riding a bike.”

Comparisons Comparisons: Sometimes these are done as images to help the reader understand how big something is:

Glossary Glossary: Helps you define words that are in the book

Graphics Graphics: Charts, graphs, or cutaways are used to help you

Illustrations Illustrations/Photographs: Help you to know exactly what something looks like

Labels! Labels: These help you identify a picture or a photograph and its parts

Maps Maps: help you to understand where places, that are mentioned in books, are located in the world!!

Special print Special Print: When a word is bold, in italics, or underlined, it is an important word for you to know.

Subtitles: “A not so great book about subtitles”. Subtitles: These headings help you understand either a bit more about what the book or passage may be about. As seen in the title above. This let’s the reader know that “this” book of subtitles might not be a very good book!!

Table of contents Table of Contents: Helps you identify key topics in the book in the order they are presented

Summary about Text features. So text features are a very important part of understanding what you are reading. We often don’t think about them but when we do they can play a “REALLY BIG PART “ in how we understand what we are reading. Now its your turn………………………….
