Plants WALT: state what plants need to live and how they obtain these things

What do we already know about plants?

Draw a quick sketch of a plant over a whole page of your books. We are going to label the plant with various facts

What do plants need to grow? Water Light Carbon dioxide Minerals For photosynthesis for energy

Leaves Photosynthesis takes place here Contain chlorophyll that absorbs light ADAPTATIONS: thin and flat to trap as much CO2 as possible

Plant Cells Plant cells contain chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll They also have a cell wall and vacuole (see if you can find out what these things do – p.9) which animal cells don’t have

Roots Absorb minerals (e.g. nitrates) Absorb water Anchor the plant ADAPTATIONS: Contain root hairs which increase surface area to absorb as much as possible

Stem Provide support – hold the leaves up Carries food and water

Photosynthesis What is the equation? Therefore what factors would affect the rate of photosynthesis? (clue: think what is needed) Light Carbon dioxide level Water Temperature

Why do you think that destruction of the rainforests is such a big problem for the Earth?

You are going to set up an experiment to prove that light is needed for photosynthesis Turn to page 71 of the books

Prep Find out what the vacuole, cell wall and chloroplast is used for in plants Answer Q1,2,3,4 of Ex. 7.2 on p. 76 of the red books. Please hand in tomorrow morning
