How did the Domino Theory affect the United States politics? Korea Korea’s 38th parallel U.N. involvement Douglas MacArthur Post Korea War 2. Vietnam France’s Vietnam Ho Chi Minh United States involvement Cultural change

Korea’s 38th Parallel Like Germany, Korea was left divided, Japan surrendered to the U.S. in the south and U.S.S.R in north U.S.S.R. supplied North Korea in Coup to invade the south

U.N. Involvement Voted to intervene in Korea Vote passed because U.S.S.R. had Boycotted the event. U.S.S.R. boycotted because the Nationalist China was given seat at U.N. not Republic of China. By 1950 North Korea controlled all except a little area around Pusan

Douglas MacArthur Made a surprise attack to cut North Korean troops in half, pushed them back to top corner by china. China got nervous with American troops so close, sent 300k troops to fight with North Koreans. Asked Truman for use of Nuclear Weapons, Truman said no. Truman will fire MacArthur for pushing of Nuclear Warfare. Cease-Fire agreement in July 1953.

After Korean War 5 million dead Border did not really change at the end of the war. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Korean_war_1950-1953.gif Korea is still divided to this day.

France’s Vietnam Vietnam was a colony of France in the early 1900’s Ho Chi Minh turned to Communist help after America turned him away. Lead revolts and Strikes against France in the 1930’s

Ho Chi Mihn Poor Vietnamese cook for French steamship. While a cook he visited American Cities and learned about Western Culture and governments Sentenced to Death in 1930’s but escaped.

Vietnam War Domino Theory coined by Eisenhower, if one falls to communism, the neighbors would fall too. Vietnam first became split with the defeat of the French, Communists took North Vietnam. U.S. and France set up government in South with un-liked dictator. Troops really poured in during late 60’s, over half a million will be in Vietnam Fighting against Northern Vietnamese using guerilla tactics, as well as South Vietnamese who hated the dictator.

Cultural Changes President Nixon began to withdraw troops in 1969. The youth of the nation moved against the Vietnam War due to photo’s, TV, and radio coverage. Showed the truth of war.
