Style Type Two –Admitting the Opposition. INTRODUCTION There are two possible opinions on this topic, opinions A and opinions B. Which is better? Admit the oposition, but assert your preference. BODY Paragraph two Here are some reasons to believe that opinion A is right. Paragraph three Here are some reasons to believe that opinion B is more correct Paragraph four Here are some even more reasons why opinion B is right. CONCLUSION Paragraph five As you can see, opinion B is right.

Some people believe that Zoos serve useful functions Some people believe that Zoos serve useful functions. Other people believe that it is cruel and wrong to confine animals in zoos. Tell which point of view you agree with and why, using specific details and reasons.

Three parts to the introduction (style two) 1. Get the reader’s attention (“The Attention Getter”) Tip: If you don’t immediately have a good idea for this, write it later. Something will come to you) 2. Mention both possible opinions using key words from the question. 3. State your opinion while at the same time admitting that there is some truth to the opposing (opposite)viewpoint.

Sample intro. for essay-Style no. 2 One of the most joyful experiences a child can have is visiting the zoo with his family. Nevertheless, as people grow older, they may change their minds about zoos. While many people see zoos as useful and important, others see zoos as cruel and wrong. Even though there are bad zoos and some cruelty is involved in their management, I believe the benefits of zoos to society outweigh (are greater than) their disadvantages.

First Body Paragraph Suggested Topic Sentence Style It is true that there are poorly managed zoos, and that there is some cruelty to animals there. OR I will admit that that there are poorly managed zoos, and that there is some cruelty to animals there.

Second Body Paragraph Suggested Topic Sentence Style There are bad zoos, and cruelty to animals exists there; nonetheless/nevertheless/however, the good things that zoos bring to society overshadow their shortcomings. NOTE: This is a mirror image of the thesis statement from ther introduction. Synonyms have been carefully chosen. Notice that the conjunction has been moved to the middle of the sentence. This conjunction is not one of the FANBOYS, so it requires special punctuation, not just a comma. Questions: Which words are used to signal contrast? Which word means “disadvantages?” Which word means “greater than?”

Third Body Paragraph Suggested Topic Sentence Style Even more reasons to believe that zoos are beneficial to society exist. OR There are even/still more reasons to feel that zoos serve a beneficial function. Still more reasons to have zoos are apparent. Note: Pay attention to the verb form (infinitive) used here.

Recommended styles for Conclusions: Style trick: Remind the reader of your attention-getter from the introduction. So, the next time you visit the zoo with family or youngsters, if you find yourself feeling that zoos serve little use to society, remember that there are several positive functions that zoos offer our communities. Elements: Uses transitional word, Refers back to attention-getter, mentions key words from question, re-states thesis statement. Some good transitional word options for a simple summary conclusion of this type: Thus, Hence,  In sum, To sum up, In short, All in all, Overall.
