Expressions and Formulas Section 1-1 Expressions and Formulas Objective: To use the order of operations to evaluate expressions, and to use formulas. Algebra II

Order of Operations Simplify the expressions inside grouping symbols, such as parentheses, brackets, braces, and fraction bars. Evaluate all powers. Do all multiplications and divisions from left to right. Do all additions and subtractions from left to right. Algebra II

Order of Operations Order of Operations ( ) ex ∙ ÷ l to r + - l to r ( ) ex ∙ ÷ l to r + - l to r P E M D A S Common mistakes with PEMDAS Algebra II

Example 1 Find the value of [(3 + 6)2 ÷ 3] ∙ 4 Algebra II

Example 2 Evaluate a[b2(b + a)] if a = 12 and b = 0.5. Evaluate if y = 4, a = -2, and b = -5. Algebra II

Example 3 Suppose the distance from a person flying a kite to the ground directly below the kite is 100 meters, and the length of the string from the person to the kite is 125 meters. Use the Pythagorean theorem to find the height of the kite. a2 + b2 = c2 Algebra II
