Appreciative Inquiry and Teaching English

Read This Poem (Individually – 1 min.) First read for: Positive or Negative? ------ 2. Now make notes where you see: Images (pictures) Colors (red, blue, green, etc.) Feelings (emotional and physical)

Poetry in Motion

Poetry in Motion (Teamwork – 5 min.) Each team will work with one part of the poem. Discuss the overall meaning of your part of the poem. What images do you see? What colors do you see? What emotions and textures do you feel? Create actions for the words/meaning in your part. You may also draw 2 pictures for your part. Your group will provide the actions and visuals to your part of the poem.

From Poetry to Video Connect the visuals and actions of the poem to the following video. (This is a true story.)

Compare Your Definitions (Pairwork – 1 min.) Ap-pre’ci-ate, v., 1. valuing; the act of recognizing the best in people or the world around us; affirming past and present strengths, successes, and potentials; to perceive those things that give life (health, vitality, excellence) to living systems 2. to increase in value, e.g. the economy has appreciated in value. Synonyms: VALUING, PRIZING, ESTEEMING, and HONORING.

Compare Your Definitions (Pairwork – 1 min.) In-quire’ (kwir), v., 1. the act of exploration and discovery. 2. To ask questions; to be open to seeing new potentials and possibilities. Synonyms: DISCOVERY, SEARCH, and SYSTEMATIC EXPLORATION, STUDY.
