Questions to ask: Focusing on text-to-self connections: What does this story remind you of? Can you relate to the characters in the story? Does anything in this story remind you of anything in your own life? Focusing on text-to-text connections: What does this remind you of in another book you have read? How is this text similar to other things you have read? How is this text different from other things you have read? Focusing on text-to-world connections: What does this remind you of in the real world? How are events in this story similar to things that happen in the real world? How are events in this story different from things that happen in the real world?

As We Read: As we read the article, highlight any information that you can connect with.

Student Connection: One student will give a summary of the book they are currently reading. If another student can relate to or connect with the story, link arms with the first student. Then give a summary of your story. How many people can we get in one chain?

Lastly, On a half sheet of paper write down the following: Text to text Text to self Text to world Give an example of how you can relate your book to each connection. How does your book remind you of another book (text to text)? How does your book remind you of yourself (text to self)? How does your book remind of you something happening in the world (text to world)?

“Making the Cut” Read the passage at your desk for 5-10 minutes. Write your name on the board when you are ready to read the passage to me. Remember, once you read through it, put your name on the board. You can answer the questions while you wait to come up OR after you come up! I will call you up. When finished, please finish the vocab, comprehension, and questions. Make sure you have at least two questions that you created from the Blooms Taxonomy.

As I finish the last read out louds: Make sure you have a decent answer to each of my questions. Make sure you have really good questions about the passage. Get a computer, log into Membean and take the quiz. Work on your SSR Reading Log and Project Reading Projects due Friday Sept. 30th Four of them will be due! Turn the desks into a circle. Wait patiently and quietly to begin read around. Prepare to ask your questions. And answer mine.

Read around: The point of a read around is for you and your students to communicate and discuss the passage you read. I will start with one question. You will answer them. I will not respond to your question. Your peers will. To keep the discussion moving, ask your questions. Keep the round table open. Do not be hateful or disrespectful. Only positive comments! Keep the round table going for as long as possible.
