What was the great shism? The break of communion between what are now the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. Important Vocab: Shism- to split

Additional Facts Divided East and West Also called the East-West Shism or The Shism of 1054 Break lasted since the 11th century when Pope Leo IX and Patriarch Michael I excommunicated each other, the East-West Schism was actually the result of an extended period of estrangement between the two bodies of churches.

East side Eastern Orthodox Church Lead by bishop of Constantitople Main language was Greek The schism between the Western and Eastern Mediterranean Christians resulted from a variety of political, cultural and theological factors which transpired over centuries

West side Catholic Church Lead by bishop of Rome (pope) Main language was Latin resulted from the return of the papacy to Rome under Gregory XI on January 17, 1377, ending the Avignon Papacy, which had developed a reputation for corruption that estranged major parts of Western Christendom.
