Modernism

A modern way of thinking, set to cultural tendencies and cultural movements. Came into play through changes to Western Society in the late 19th, Early 20th Century. Rejects the idea of realism. Re-imagines every aspect of existence and progress.

“popularized ‘modernism’ and ‘modernistic’ kitsch, corresponds in turn to a social interval, a social interval that has always existed in formal culture, as elsewhere in civilized society” (Greenberg 9).

Greenberg saw Modernism ending in the 1930s, why do we think it continued to flourish and expand?

Pollock, No. 5 1948

"When (if) Modernism petered out and postmodernism began has been contested almost as hotly as when the transition from Victorianism to Modernism occurred” Greenberg

Carolee Schneemann Interior Scroll

Frank Stella

Sonia Delaunay

“In the end the peasant will go back to kitsch when he feels like looking at pictures, for he can enjoy kitsch without effort”

What place does modernism hold in art education What place does modernism hold in art education? What age groups (if any) should be exposed to it. Should modernism start to fade out more traditional, historically-renowned artists that are referenced in art education? As artists, should all aspects of culture be referenced in modernism, or should there be limits?
