7th Grade Healthful Living Essential Standard 7.ATOD.2 Apply risk reduction behaviors to protect self and others from alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. 7th Grade Healthful Living

Clarifying Objective 7. ATOD. 2 Clarifying Objective 7.ATOD.2.1 Use communication strategies to avoid the consequences of tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use.

Why Communication is Important The ability to develop and practice effective interpersonal communication skills is critical to the success in refusing the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and the subsequent consequences associated with substance abuse. With the use of these skills you will be able to handle pressure situations

Effective Communication Skills The use of ”I messages” I am not interested No thanks, I don’t drink I do not want to I have to go home, I have to be somewhere in five minutes, I am meeting someone I have a health condition this is affected by I will lose my spot on the team

Effective Communication Skills Effective listening skills Use of assertive verbal and non-verbal (body language) communication Use of appropriate tone Demonstration of respect for others.

When the elements of communication skills are practiced in well-constructed and realistic scenarios with the opportunity for feedback from the instructor and others, students increase the likelihood of utilizing these skills when needed in the future and recalling prepared responses which may help them act on their values and planned intentions to live a lifestyle free of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
