Exploration Social Studies Unit 2

What is an Explorer? An explorer is a person that travels to an unknown land Characteristics of explorers: Like to travel Usually are looking for something

Reasons to explore? Gain land / Grow size of empire- Many countries thought the more land they had, the more power they had. So many king’s paid for explorers to go out and claim new land for the to expand their empire (they thought the bigger my kingdom, the badder my country is!) Religion- many Kings sent explorers and missionaries out to explore and spread their religion. They felt Christianity was the best religion and they wanted to spread the word of their religion

Reasons to explore… continued Riches- Explorers explored to get rich, or should I say to make their king rich! They searched for gold, silver, and spices. During the time of exploration. Spices were also a measure of your wealth! Technology- before this time, they did not have the technology to really go out into the ocean. But inventions like the compass were invented which helped captains know their direction. Also, Prince Henry started a navigational school to teach men how to sail and use these new tools Find the Northwest Passage- an all water route to Asia from Europe.

How did the geography, climate, and natural resources affect exploration? Geography is the land. The geography could be a huge obstacle for the explorers. For example, mountains are very hard to cross and rivers, while they provide fish to eat, often the water flows very quickly. These swift rivers were definitely an obstacle for the explorers. The geography could also provide valuable resources. Rivers provided fish and water. Plains have many animals the explorers could hunt for food. Climate- Since the explorers were in new land, they did not know what to expect the climate to be. This at times was a challenge for them. Natural resources- certain places have lots of resources, like animals for food, water, and trees. Other areas, like a desert

Other Obstacles faced by the Explorers: No maps of the areas they were exploring Hostile Native Americans that would attack Crews got scared and lost faith in their captains Sailors caught diseases Geography, climate, and uneven distribution of the natural resources
