Marching Toward War HSCE 7.2.1 *Turn of the 20th century---Euro nations had been at peace for about 30 years. --nations had made it a priority to keep peace and avoid wars. **4 MAIN Causes to WWI… Militarism Alliances (tangled) Imperialism Nationalism

Marching Toward War HSCE 7.2.1 M-Militarism---glorifying military power and keeping an army prepared for war. The need to protect assets and exert power and influence thrusts the world into an arms race. Arms race- Euro countries began to build up their militaries --Euro countries (except Gr. Br.) had standing armies that could quickly mobilize and take over an area

Marching Toward War HSCE 7.2.1 A- Alliances *Alliance system originally designed to keep peace in Europe now pitted nations of the world against each other.

Marching Toward War HSCE 7.2.1 I- Imperialism --quest for colonies & FOP was fierce --countries mistrusted one another as they competed for resources and influence overseas.

Reasons for Tensions N- Nationalism---devotion to one’s nation --can cause intense competition among nations --Rivalries = Germany, Austria-Hungary, Gr. Britain, Russia, Italy, & france. --competed for resources, markets --territory disputes

*Triple Alliance---Otto Von Bismarck (Prussia--unified Germany) --He saw France as the greatest threat to peace --must isolate France—could have no allies --made an alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. --1881—allies w/ Russia *Kaiser Wilhelm II---ruler of Germany—forces Bismarck to resign.—did not want to share power --wanted to show the world just how great Germany was 1890—he lets treaty w/ Russia expire, so Russia joins w/ france.---big trouble for Germany……war would mean two-front war… --Built navy to rival British---they freaked out & formed alliance w/ france….Triple Entente---Britain, france, Russia all formed an alliance. Triple Alliance vs. Triple Entente!

Crisis in the Balkans *mountainous peninsula in southeastern corner of Europe --known as the “powder keg” of Europe --read “A Restless Region” on page 843 *Archduke Franz Ferdinand---heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. --riding through the streets of Sarajevo in open car --He and his wife are shot & killed by a Serbian---wanted Bosnia to be rid of Austrian rule. --killer was a member of the Black Hand --Austria decides to punish Serbia….despite offers of peace, Austria wants war & declares war on Serbia…. http://www.history.com/videos/causes-of-world-war-i#causes-of-world-war-i Causes of WWI **Serbia has an alliance w/ Russia…….all alliances kick in and The Great War begins…..
