Cells and Cell Organelles

Cells Basic building block of life Everything that is living is made of cells Cells are made of smaller parts called organelles They function like our own organs providing support for their cell

Nucleus Controls all cellular activities Contains genetic information “blueprint” for cell Brain is to the body as Nucleus is to cell

Mitochondria Considered the “powerhouse” of the cell Carries out cellular respiration to produce energy combines Oxygen and nutrients from food Lungs are to body as mitochondria are to cell

Cell Membrane Surrounds entire cell Holds in cytoplasm and organelles Regulates what goes into and out of cell Skin is to body as cell membrane is to cell

Cytoplasm Gives animal cells their shape by filling in empty areas of cell Holds organelles in place

Vacuole Stores water and nutrients for cell Can breakdown cell waste Plants have a LARGE central vacuole used for support Animal cells have a few small vacuoles Bones in our body are as Vacuoles in plants

Chloroplast FOUND ONLY IN PLANT CELLS Where photosynthesis is carried out It’s what make a plant green

Cell Wall FOUND ONLY IN PLANTS Rigid outer barrier that help support plant cells.
