Convection in the Mantle Mr. Anderson

Convection Heat transfer by the movement of fluids. Fluid=liquid or gas Caused by differences of temperature and density within a fluid.

Convection Currents Heated fluids, become less dense and rise. As fluids cool down, become more dense and sink.

Layers of the Mantle Lithosphere- crust and upper mantle. uppermost part of mantle is similar to the crust.

LAyers of the Mantle Asthenosphere- soft layer of mantle the lithosphere “floats” on. soft and flexible like plastic.

Convection in the Mantle Heat from the outer core cause convection currents in the mantle. Contributes to Plate Tectonics.

Plate Tectonics The theory that the lithosphere is in slow constant motion. Supports the Continental Drift Theory.
