What’s a theme? RL.12.2: I can determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text. A theme is the universal message the author is trying to convey about his/her work.

A theme is NOT :( Instead, a theme IS :) A moral or command -- It doesn’t tell us how to behave by using words like should A common saying -- It is not a cliche like “Actions speak louder than words Specific to the text -- It doesn’t refer to the specific characters and plot in the text Absolute -- It doesn’t use words like “all,” “none,” or “always” because that kind of statement is rarely true. An observation -- It makes a comment about the way things appear to be in reality Original and thoughtful --If should be something you find interesting, something a bit philosophical General, about reality -- It translates the characters and plot into generalizations such as “people” or “parents” Reasonable -- It uses terms like “sometimes” or “often” or refers to limited circumstances to suggest a more realistic view of the variety in life.
