Why Scientific Inquiry? To make fair decisions

Some Announcements !!! Make notes during this activity , tomorrow you are going to have a little quiz. Then we will discuss this topic in detail. I will do another magical activity, so be prepared to have some fun as well 

Steps for Scientific Inquiry Making Observations Stating an Hypothesis Making a Prediction Identifying Variables Designing a Fair Test Forming a Conclusion

Making Observations Observe the pencil carefully Is it different from other pencils How is it different?

Identify the Problem When you rub this pencil it changes its colour It goes back to its original colour when you stop rubbing it.

Stating an Hypothesis Give one reason why this pencil changes its colour (5 min.)

Identifying variables Colour Material Wood type This Pencil is not sharpened but others are Temperature may be …….

Designing a Fair Test We can try all the hypothesis one by one. For example: I can sharpen the pencil and see whether it stops changing colour. (I know it is not going to change its colour anyway) What if I consider a different temperature A person having relatively low temperature can rub it in his/her hands (it will not change its colour)

Conclusion Why pencil changes its colour? Ans. Due to increase in temperature. Your hands are warmer than the pencil. A cold substance emits different colour and a warmer substance emits different colour. This phenomenon is not visible in all the pencils. This pencil is designed particularly to show this phenomenon. The paint is different from regular pencils.
