Farming in Ancient Egypt

The perfect Place for Farming Grew crops along the banks A River, specifically the Nile rile. the river would flood, leaving good farming soil behind.

Plants That were Grown Egyptians grew crops such as wheat, barley, vegetables, figs, melons, pomegranates and vines.

THREE FARMING SEASONS Egyptians farmed in three cycles or seasons: Flooding season Growing season Harvesting season

The flooding season June – September No farming was done because the land was flooded by the river.

The Growing Season October-February Once the flood waters were gone, the land was rich with nutrients and ready for planting.

The Harvesting Season March-May. Once the crops were fully grown they were gathered or harvested.

Harvesting Workers were called reapers. they cut crops down with tools called sickles. After crops were cut down, the women and children collected the crops that were fallen.

Farming was important Farming was important. it enabled the Egyptians to live in one place instead of traveling around.

Staying in One place They were able to live in one place and began building a lasting city. They built great structures like the pyramids. They created a form of writing called hieroglyphics. They also created a government with a leader called the Pharaoh. All these helped the Egyptians become a strong civilization.
