THE RIGHT TO KNOW LAW REQUIRES THAT YOU BE INFORMED OF Immediate Dangers and Possible Long Term Health Effects of using a chemical At Work or School Immediate Dangers Fires Explosions Irritations to the eyes or skin Burns to the skin Poisoning Long Term Health Effects Cancer Respiratory problems Birth defects Mutations Other illnesses

How can chemicals enter the body How can chemicals enter the body? Inhalation – breathed through mouth or nose Absorption – touches skin or is injected Ingestion – swallowed Ocular – through the eyes

HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT IS HAZARDOUS??? Hazard Communications - It’s a way for the student/employee to get information about chemical hazards in the workplace. It’s for the student’s protection. It’s a federal law and applies to all states Signal words Label contents Color coding on the containers Number system on the containers MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheets

Signal Words… word that calls attention to the safety sign and designate a degree or level of hazard seriousness.

NFPA CHEMICAL HAZARD LABEL Burns readily. Diborane May detonate with heat or ignition. Severe health risk. Avoid water.

MSDS Material Safety Data Sheet On file for all purchased chemicals. Includes all information shown on a chemical label and more. Important!!! Our RED Right to Know Book is located on the back cabinet of the classroom. It contains the MSDS of any substance that you may work with in this class.
