Trade in the United States January 18,1803: POTUS Thomas Jefferson sends secret letter to Congress requesting finances for a transcontinental exploration. Requests: $2,500 - “for the purpose of extending the external commerce of the United States” House & Senate pass the act on February 22,1803

The Expedition The Corps of Discovery led by Captain Lewis & 2nd Lieut. Clark to explore the US lands obtained by the Louisiana Purchase & the Pacific Northwest. Began near St. Louis, Missouri in May 1804 Received assistance from many Natives along their journey. Sacagawea & Touissant Charbonneau acted as interpreters throughout the journey

Middle 1800’s Dirt roads had been built in parts of the nation. The use of river steamboats increased. Boats also traveled along man- made canals which strengthened local economies.

Canal An artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation.
