Why are we learning about Classification? Sept 16 or 17 Why are we learning about Classification? Aristotle, Linnaeus, and Darwin… …… or why does that zebra have spots???

Aristotle (384-323 BC) Greece First scientist to develop a classification system for living things Classified animals by their appearance, behavior, but mostly by how they move!

Those that crawl, walk, or run These were divided into three groups: Those that could fly Those that could swim Those that crawl, walk, or run What are the problems with this??? His ideas of using careful observations is still the basis for classification! (note: groups are no longer put into large groups on the basis of how they move or where they live!) Currently DNA is being used to establish relationships between organisms – this is called Molecular phylogenetics.

Carl Linne (1707-1778) Sweden Medical degree 1735 Wrote a book called “System Naturae” that classified plants First to use “binomial nomenclature” or two word naming (genus and species) (Homo sapiens)

What’s my name? Carolus Linnaeus Carl Linnaeus Carl von Linné Carolus a Linné The original Diddy Puff Daddy Puffy P Diddy Diddy Sean John Sean Combs Provided a simple collection of all the world's plants and animals as then known. This included 7,700 species of plants and 4,400 species of animals. In 1758 “binomial nomenclature” became the accepted way to name/identify organisms.

Charles Darwin (1809 – 1882) England Published a theory about how a species can change over time. This theory had a major impact on how species are classified. Collected data for his theory on the Galapagos Islands off the western coast of South America. Noticed that finches on the island were similar to one another but had differences. His theory is called “evolution”.

Soooooo what?????? Back in the day… … long story - pay attention … it includes attack bunnys and violent squirrels
