HISTOLOGY THE STUDY OF TISSUES

Four Major TissueTypes Epithelial Tissue Muscle Tissue

…..more tissues…. Nervous Tissue

EPITHELIAL TISSUE Covers surfaces of body and forms glands Very little matrix- mostly cells Some types have one free surface and one attached surface (to a basement membrane)

FUNCTION: Protection Barrier Control of movement of substances Secreting absorption PROTECT YOUR SKIN SO IT CAN PROTECT YOU!

TYPES OF EPITHELIUM: Simple Squamous(one layer) Functions in diffusion, secretion, protection Found in lungs and blood vessels

EPITHELIUM Simple cuboidal Functions in active and passive transport and secretion Found in kidney tubules, lungs, ovaries

EPITHELIUM Simple columnar Functions in filtering air in lungs with cilia, secretion, and absorption Location: glands. Lungs, stomach, intestines

EPITHELIUM Pseudostratified columnar Functions in synthesis and secretion of mucus, movement of mucus Location: linings of respiratory system

STRATIFIED EPITHELIUM Stratified Squamous (many layers) Functions: protects against abrasion, infection, and water loss Found in: skin, mouth, respiratory tract, eyes

STRATIFIED EPITHELIUM Stratified Cuboidal epithelium Functions in: secretion, absorption, protection against infection Found in: sweat gland and salivary gland ducts, ovaries

STRATIFIED EPITHELIUM Stratified columnar epithelium Functions in: protection and secretion Found in: larynx, mammary gland ducts

TRANSITIONAL EPITHELIUM Stratified cells appear cuboidal when tissue is relaxed and squamous when tissue is stretched. Functions in: accommodate change of fluid volume in organs, protects against caustic urine. Found in: urinary bladder, urethra, ureters
