Imperial China Collapses Ch. 30 sec. 3 *Nationalists--- wanted modernization & nationalization -Kuomintang = Nationalist Party --Sun Yixian = Nationalist Party leader -1912—pres. of new Rep. of China -wants nationalism, people’s rights, & economic success for Chinese *Sun lacked authority & army = a gen. takes over rule of China as a dictator---dies, and by 1916, China is at the mercy of territorial warlords…… *WWI = Trouble for China---1917---China declares war on Germany----- -China hoped the Allies would return the lands taken by Germany back to them --Instead, the land went to Japan!!!!

*May 4th Movement---1919---huge protest in Beijing --3K protestors angry at Treaty of Versailles -wanted a more modern China --many Chinese began to favor Russia’s Communism *Communist Party in China---1921---Mao Zedong -urged the peasants to rise up *Sun---joined the Kuomintang with the Communists --Lenin sent advisors to China to help the Commies *Jiang Jieshi---takes over Kuomintang--Nationalists --does NOT want communism -wants democracy --Most peasants went w/ the communists *Mao divided Communist claimed farms & gave it to the peasants.

*1927—1928 = Nationalists (Jieshi) wage war against the Communists (Mao Zedong) for control of China --1933— The Long March---Jieshi & 700K of his men surrounded 100K of Mao’s men…. --Commies retreated into the hills of northwestern China --called the Long March --only 7-8K of Mao’s people survived the march --gained NEW followers, though *1937---Japanese invade China! Took advantage of the civil war --Nationalists & Communists sign truce to fight the Japanese --still did not like each other, but did not like the Japanese even more.
