Buying Energy

Tuesday 30 October Energy Efficiency SLO: Explain what efficiency means. • Define efficiency • Use energy efficiency calculations or Sankey diagrams to determine efficiency Recall: a lot of energy is wasted during energy transformations. E.g. light bulb heating up, how do we reduce it? Worksheet on energy efficiency, including worked examples of how to calculate efficiency – everyday examples. Sankey Diagram examples. Pgs 105, 106, Exploring Science 9 for examples. Check temperature of water with the different lamps.

Tuesday 30 (10VR), Wednesday 31 (10VR) Generating electrical energy SLO: Describe how electrical energy is generated. • Explain how turbines and generators work Finish looking at Sankey diagrams. How is energy generated? Discussion Read pp. 106-107, Exploring Science 9 and notes on how energy is generated. Cut and paste activity 9Ib/1 – The generation game. 9lb/7 - complete Discussion: effects of energy generation on environment and do a PMI for each type of generation.

Thursday 1 November Components in a cell SLO: Identify components in a circuit. • Recognise symbols for components • Describe the function of cells, lamps, resistors, switches What do you already know about electrical circuits? ‘Steps for Drawing Circuits’. Modelling how circuit diagrams should be drawn. Build and draw simple circuits using stations set up around the room. Pair-mark circuit diagrams.
