L.O. To understand how developments in technology led to developments in crime. By the end of this lesson... ALL OF US will be able to describe the actions of the Luddites and Swing Rioters. (E-D) EVEN BETTER IF you can give a detailed description of the Luddites, and Swing Rioters and their actions, and give reasons for them. (C) EXCELLENT IF you explain why these crimes developed. (B-A)

The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th Centuries was the most influential transformation of culture and working patterns in over ten thousand years. Its effects fuelled change in labour patterns, social structure, the function of the family and the values and attitudes of the individual. It involved more than just technological expansion - it was driven by massive social change. Technological innovations forced communities out of their traditional working patterns in their homes and into urban factories. This new spinning frame was huge, and could do the work of fifty people on spinning frames like mine! IN NO MORE THAN THREE SENTENCES, EXPLAIN HOW WORKING PATTERNS CHANGED IN ENGLAND!

What crimes did they commit? The new developments in technology led to the development of new types of crime. The first example we will investigate is the crimes of the Luddites. Start Timer Who were the Luddites? What crimes did they commit? What caused the Luddites to commit these crimes? Who was Ned Ludd? Where and when did the Luddites attack? (specific towns) 10 Minutes 10 8 6 4 2

It was not just in Industrial areas that technology led to problems!

Use the source handout to complete the task below: The government are concerned about a new type of unrest taking place in England. You must answer the following questions for them in as much detail as you can!: When have the riots taken place? Where have they taken place? What problems to the people face? What are the Swing Rioters attacking? Why have they attacked these things? Who is Captain Swing and why does he exist? Start Timer 10 Minutes 10 8 6 4 2

Now self assess your work today! (B-A)
