Any good Advice? Have you ever given really good advice before? Explain the situation and tell me why you gave the advice. If you have never given any good advice describe a time when you received really good advice.

Judging the Juveniles We will go over the basics of Juvenile Justice We will have a John Jefferies simulation Finish watching the flipped video Prepare for next week

Delinquent Vs Unruly A delinquent act is an act committed by a juvenile that would be considered a crime by an adult Some examples include theft, assault, drug possession, or worse An unruly act is one that would not be considered as a crime if they were an adult Some examples include skipping school, possessing a cigarette, not obeying authority, and breaking curfew

The Rights of Juveniles The right to have a parent present when they are questioned The right to not have their pictures or names made public The right to have two phone calls (parents and attorney) The right to not self incriminate The right to not be placed with adult offenders The right to contact parents immediately

7 delinquent behaviors The seven most serious delinquent behaviors that a kid between 13-17 can commit that will make them charged as an adult are Murder Voluntary Manslaughter Rape Aggravated Sodomy Aggravated Child Molestation Aggravated sexual battery Armed robbery

Setting up the Simulation You will either be one of these people in the simulation Mother / Father Intake officer Judge Attorney Kid from the Future We will not figure out what John Jefferies did John Jefferies

Before the Act If you are playing the role of the mother or father I want you to get ready I want you to write a thirty second response to the way John Jefferies is acting Try to move him away from his decisions to make harmful decisions for himself I will select someone to read their response to the class

Arresting and Intake John was just arrested and taken in right after committing the crime If you are the intake officer pay attention I want you to develop two things, first write down the rights you would tell John that he has Next prepare a thirty second response to John’s reaction to being told what to do and how much trouble he would be in

The Trial of John Jefferies If you are the judge I want you write a thirty second initial conversation to John explaining why they are in court (Adjudicatory hearing) If you are a girl and you are an attorney you will be the defense attorney, come up with a thirty second statement why he is innocent or why he shouldn’t be tried as harshly If you are a guy then you are the prosecuting attorney. Give me a thirty second reason why he should be punished (Dispositional Hearing)

Final Plea and Sentencing If you are the parent you will make one final thirty second plea to the judge to let John go The judge will determine based on what he has heard a good sentencing for John Jefferies after his final plea (Sentencing) After John is charged he spends time in Jail and later is given the chance to plea to the judge again (appeal or parole)

20 Years Later If you are a future kid I want you to come up with a thirty second claim about how “bad” you are and you are about to commit a crime in John’s neighborhood Next come up with a thirty second response to how you feel after the conversation with John Jefferies and his life experience

Finishing Flipped Finish watching this flipped episode Hopefully you now have a better understanding of the juvenile justice process Based on everything you have learned what do you think of John, Jonathan, and Tina?
