DEFINITIONS Mass- the amount of matter an object has. Matter- something that has mass and takes up space. Weight- the force of gravity acting on an object’s mass.

Standard: 1 kilogram is equal to the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK), a platinum-iridium cylinder kept by the BIPM at Sèvres, France. Measuring Mass We will be using electronic scales to find the mass of various objects. Steps to use the Electronic Scale: Plug it in and turn it on. Wait until you see 0.0 (you may have to press the zero button). Place the object on the scale. Record the measurement.
