Principle #15 Use Feedback to Fast-Forward

“Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” What does this mean? “Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” -Ken Blanchard Self-made millionaire and bestselling author

Using Feedback to Self-Correct “Smart missiles” can be shot from thousands of miles away and strike within inches of the target location. What makes “smart missiles” so smart? They have the ability to adjust their course while in flight by using feedback to their advantage. What can be learned from the “smart missile”?

Quick Write (3 Minutes) Write about a time when you received negative feedback about something. Did this motivate you to do better? If so, how?

Quick Write (3 Minutes) Write about a time when you received positive feedback about something. Did this motivate you to do better? If so, how?

Feedback Takes Many Forms Once you begin taking action toward any goal, you will get feedback in the form of: Advice Data Help Suggestions Direction Compliments Criticism

Change How You Hear Negative Feedback “I’ve failed… ..I can’t do anything right…Why do I even try?” “I can learn from this…maybe I should try a different way...”

“There is no such thing as failure. There is only feedback.” Two Types of Feedback Positive ● Good grades ● Awards ● Trophies ● Compliments Negative ● Low grades ● Criticism ● Poor results ● Failure “There is no such thing as failure. There is only feedback.”

Explain:

Demonstration Have one volunteer stand on one side of the room. Help the teacher reach the volunteer by saying only “on course” or “off course”

The Lesson of the Demonstration Which was said more “on course” or “off course”? Did the teacher still reach the goal? How can you apply this to your life?

The Wrong Responses Caving in and quitting Getting mad at the source Ignoring the feedback

Ask for Feedback Some people won’t give feedback un less you ask. So…ask! Don’t take the feedback personally Use the feedback to adjust your actions Be grateful and appreciative of the feedback

Silent Reading Read about using feedback to fast-forward on pages 165-178 in the book entitled The Success Principles by Jack Canfield and Kent Healy. Take down one page of Cornell notes.
