What happens to solar energy as it enters the atmosphere? Atmospheric Heating What happens to solar energy as it enters the atmosphere?
Three types of heat transfer Radiation Conduction Convection
Radiation-energy transferred by waves This is how Earth receives energy Electromagnetic waves Earth only receives a fraction of the amount of energy sun radiates Drives the weather cycle This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
Conduction-energy transferred by contact (must touch) Experience this when you touch something hot Thermal conduction is when heat energy is passed through material Always transferred from warm to cold in thermal conduction When air molecules come into direct contact with the warm surface of Earth, thermal energy is transferred to atmosphere.
Convection-energy transferred by circulation of a liquid or gas Transfer of thermal energy by circulation or movement of a liquid or gas. Most thermal energy in the atmosphere is transferred by convection. Air is heated, condenses, then rises. Cycle repeats Cool air sinks, pushes warm air up (heat rises, remember), cool air is heated by earth’s surface and begins to rise again. The circular movement of air is called a convection current
