Literary Terms Symbol (p. 1139) – a person, a place, a thing, or an event that has meaning in itself and also stands for something much more than itself Villanelle (p. 1142) – an intricately patterned, nineteen-line lyric poem

Quickwrite #1 Pick one thing from nature that represents survival to you. Explain.

“The Fish” p. 1140 Describe the speaker. Find an example of simile. Why is the oxygen terrible to the fish? Metaphorically, to what is the fish compared? Why does the speaker let the fish go?

Quickwrite #2 (p. 1142) We all lose things – a favorite cap, our keys, a pair of sunglasses. Take a few minutes to write down some of the losses everyone must face in life – from silly losses to tragic ones.

“One Art” p. 1143 What art is the speaker referring to? What are some things that the speaker has lost? In stanzas 1-4, how does the speaker feel about losing these things? In stanza 5, how does the speaker’s feelings about loss appear to have changed?

Activity P. 1144 Writing – Analyzing a Poem Write a brief narration telling what happens in the poem “The Fish” using chronological order. Include what is happening inside the speaker’s mind throughout the narration.
