Writing Students will do a lot of writing this year Notebooks – 2-5 pages per week Student choice writing Letter essays about books they have read Writing workshop 2-3 days per week Units of writing: Poetry, Advocacy Journalism (argument writing), Memoir (narrative writing), and Reviews (argument writing)

Reading Students must bring a novel to class every day Reading workshop 2-3 days per week Reading well requires consistent practice Reading workshop philosophy Student choice, text complexity, letter essays                                                            Reasons to Read 1. Reading is rewarding                                     6. Reading prepares you for the world of work. 2.Reading builds a mature vocabulary.          7. Reading well is financially rewarding. 3.Reading makes you a better writer.             8. Reading opens the door to college and beyond 4.Reading is hard, and "hard" is necessary.  9. Reading arms you against oppression. 5.Reading makes you smarter.                       10. Reading develops your moral compass.

Language and grammar We will use No Red Ink for targeted grammar instruction. Pre-test to determine deficits.  Students are assigned lessons to target deficits.   Other grammar and language will be taught in context through reading and writing.

@Home requirements 1 hour block for ELA at (MS)2TC RAH Writing Parent signature Books listed Minimum 30 minutes per day outside school Writing Write in school writer's notebook for 1 hour per week

Other fun facts I accept late work for a 25% grade reduction. Students can rewrite many things for a higher grade. Portfolios are kept in the room, but you can ask your student to bring it home any time.
