Understanding the Theme Key Element Clues Title Terry’s father wanted to “stop the sun” from coming up so that he would survive. Characters Terry: Didn’t understand what happened to his dad and wanted to know more; wanted to help him Dad: Didn’t want to talk about his experience Conflict Terry was embarrassed by his father’s behavior; Terry’s dad has flashbacks from his experience in Vietnam Words/Phrases “stop the sun”; “You can’t know this…”; “Eyes went away” Themes: You need to try to understand something before you make judgments. If someone you love is in trouble, try to help them the best way you can.
