Floods Way too much water

What is a flood? A flood occurs when rivers, lakes, streams and the ground cannot hold any more water and the water collects over normally dry ground. From 1900-2000, floods were the number one catastrophic damage in the United States, causing the most damage and deaths.

What causes floods? A lot of rain or melting snow Too much water for the ground to absorb Dirt that is frozen and can't absorb water Ice or other objects blocking the flow of a river Other catastrophic events, like a hurricane or a tsunami.

Effects of a flood Damage to property and homes People and animals can be killed Communities in flood zones must be rebuilt
