3.5 Redrafting to Add More Evidence

CONNECTION Friend climbing Mount Denali in Alaska Heavy pack of 130 pounds of supplies Writing an argument is like climbing a mountain WITH your heavy pack—pounds and pounds of evidence and quotes! What supplies do you need for your trip and what can you leave at home? Where should you pack your supplies in your backpack so you can reach them as you’re traveling and need them?

TEACHING Remember this? Have your reasons changed? I think ____________because (reason 1), (reason 2), and because (reason 3). One reason is that… For example (evidence a) Also, (evidence b) In addition, (evidence c) Another reason is that… In addition, (evidence c).

TEACHING How will you organize your information? Will you look at your notes and number them to say which paragraph they will go in? You will not use all your reasons and evidence. What is your BEST reasons and evidence?

TEACHING Make an outline to help you write: Intro: I think that chocolate milk should be banned because it is not healthy, gets kids addicted to sugar, and costs more money. Chocolate milk is not healthy It has added sugar It has more calories It has added fat Chocolate milk gets kids addicted to sugar Sugar makes the brain crave more—like a drug Drinking sugar makes your food taste bland so you will want more sugar in your food. If you eat lots of sugar, your taste buds become immune to lesser amounts of sugar so they need more to taste it in the future. Make an outline to help you write: Intro: I think that ____________because (reason 1), reason 2, and because (reason 3). (Reason 1) (evidence a) (evidence b) (evidence c) (Reason 2)
