Ecology Chapter 3

Interactions and interdependence Vocabulary Ecology What is ecology? Haeckel saw the living world as a household with an economy in which organisms play a role. Ecology is the scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment.

Vocabulary Biosphere Biotic Factors Abiotic Factors The biosphere contains the combined portions of the planet in which all of life exists, including land, water, and air. The biosphere extends from 8 Km above Earth’s surface to as far as 11 Km below the surface of the ocean Biotic Factors Living things Example.- plants, deer, wolf. Abiotic Factors Non living things Example.- air, light, water.

Levels of Organization in Ecology To understand relationship within the biosphere, ecologists ask questions about events and organisms that range in complexity from a single individual to the entire biosphere.

Vocabulary Species Population Community Ecosystem Species Group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring. Population Group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area. Community A group of populations that live in the same area Ecosystem A collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their nonliving or physical environment.

Ecosystem Community Habitat

Vocabulary Biome Biosphere Biome Group of ecosystems that have the same climate and dominant communities. Biosphere Contains the combined portions of the planet in which all of life exists, including land, water, and air.
