Ionic BONDING

Happiness…… Everyone wants to be happy.. What makes an atom happy?! Atoms are no different. What makes an atom happy?!

OCTET!! OCTET: 8 valence electrons Atoms will lie, cheat and steal to achieve an octet. aka: atoms share electrons, take electrons and give electrons to have 8 valence electrons

FOCUS ON THE GIVERS and TAKERS When giving/taking is involved it is called ionic bonding. Ionic Bonding: when atoms gain or lose electron(s) to form a chemical bond

GIVERS Who gives?!

TAKERS Who takes?!

GIVERS/TAKERS Left side – givers (metals) Right side – takers (non-metals)

PUTTING IT TOGETHER: Lewis dot structures: Shows the number of valence electrons Shows the number of unpaired electrons Shows the number of lone pairs electrons Shows where bonds can happen

DOT STRUCTURE Rules: Write the chemical symbol of the element Determine the number of valence electrons Divide the symbol into 4 sides Place one electron on each side before adding a second

What happens to the charge when atoms take/give or gain/lose? Take/Gain negative charge anion Give/Lose positive charge cation

Draw the Lewis Dot Structure and determine the charge. Na F S Ca Al N
