You have exactly 5 minutes. 18 & 19 September 2014 Daily Assignment: Remove all items from your desk except paper, a writing utensil and your journal. Begin the following journal entry as soon as the bell rings. You have exactly 5 minutes. Journal Entry 7: “Battle Royal” What is the primary purpose (focus) of this photograph? Describe the details (specific images) in the photo— create a list of your observations. Does the scene seem odd or strike you as “off” in any way? Explain.

HW: Finish decorating your journals—submit Monday. Agenda: 1. Read and discuss “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison 2. Answer Reading Questions in pairs and submit both partners’ answers no later than 10:10. 3. Decorate journals and paste entries onto appropriate pages. Reading Questions: You have 15 minutes to read each question and answer in complete sentences. This excerpt is the first chapter of the novel Invisible Man. Why is it important that the narrator doesn’t have a name? What important message does the narrator’s dying grandfather give him? Why does the grandfather feel disgusted? Where has the narrator been invited and why? When he arrives, other than the white men, who is present? How do the white men embarrass the Negro boys during the battle royal? What happens to the narrator? Why is he singled out during the battle royal? After the Battle Royal is over, what is the narrator asked to do? How do the white men behave? What does he accidentally say during his speech? What is the audience’s reaction? What items does he receive at the end of the story? Is he grateful? What is the dream at the end of the selection? What is the symbolism of the letter?
