Chapter 5 – writing the essay March 6 2018 EE advisement lesson Chapter 5 – writing the essay March 6 2018

INTRODUCTION Open EE book to page 62 – someone volunteer to read aloud as everyone else reads silently. Introduction Look at the image on 62 – see the 4 components of an EE Introduction? Someone read aloud page 63 the FOUR necessary components of the Introduction. The purple chart is a ‘cheat sheet’ for how to state your “worthiness of investigation” part. Someone read aloud the Exemplar introduction…read the RED first…read the research question…someone read the CONTEXT…someone else read the OUTLINE OF ARGUMENT…someone else read the SCOPE….someone else read the WORTHINESS OF INVESTIGATION NOTICE AT THE BOTTOM - ---- an introduction should be AROUND 300-450 words in total…everyone should make a NOTE of that!!!!

BODY OF PAPER Someone read aloud page 65 – Main Body Someone read aloud page 65 – Paragraph Writing I LOOOOOOOVVVEEE page 66 – everyone read silently the entire page and take note on using it later to refer to…It shows you what belongs in each paragraph of your paper We talked about this in TOK – look at what it says in GREEN – What insight does this paragraph offer to the overall question? -- remember what I said to you regarding my #1 complaint in all essays??? RELEVANCE? Make what you say RELEVANT to your research question. Everyone read the exemplar paragraph on page 67 silently We already talked about page 69 – regarding analysis – this is your cheat sheet for how to incorporate analysis in your paper

CONCLUSION Someone read aloud page 71 where it begins with conclusion and keep reading the purple chart aloud. Page 73 provides you with an exemplar conclusion that shows how to include the THREE needed elements of your conclusion: Summarize main points Offer summative synthesis of key points Acknowledge limitations Everyone read it silently NOTICE AT THE BOTTOM – YOUR CONCLUSION SHOULD BE AROUND 350-450 WORDS.

What else? I will post this powerpoint on my website ibnahs.weebly.com under the IB EE for you to look at later But there are few other things you need to know 1 – your first submission should be your final paper that you get one for chance to improve upon – meaning you need to do your very best on it so that we can actually give you advice for the final submission. 2 – for first submission, you need to read the ‘advice for students’ sheet I have on my website under the IB EE – it tells you exactly what goes in the paper and how it is to be laid out – I also gave this to you back in October 3 – you upload a copy of 1st submission on turnit.com under Ms. Shilling’s assignment IB Juniors 2019 1st submission– you can actually do this early to see if there is any evidence of plagiarism so you an fix it. 4 – upload a copy on managebac under the EE tab 5 – hand HARD copy to ME – no one else gets it – just ME by 8:45 on March 20. Write you advisor’s name on the hard copy.
