The Pueblo American Indians of the Southwest

The Pueblo Indians were the Indians of the Southwest region The Pueblo Indians were the Indians of the Southwest region. They are found in Arizona, New Mexico, the bottom of Utah and Colorado, and the western part of Texas.

Climate The northern region of the southwest are tall mountains and deep canons where rivers flow. The Grand Canyon is in this region. Forests of pine, juniper and piñon pine grow on the mountains in the middle of the region. Juniper Piñon Pine

The south is mostly desert with sagebrush and cacti The south is mostly desert with sagebrush and cacti. The days can be very hot and the nights very cold because the air is dry. There is not much rain. Cactus Sagebrush

Shelter The Pueblo Indians lived multi-story terraced buildings Shelter The Pueblo Indians lived multi-story terraced buildings. The buildings were made from clay bricks that were baked in the sun. These bricks are called adobe. People used ladders to get into their homes, and in times of danger, they pulled up the ladders so that the enemy couldn’t get inside.

The Pueblo were also hunters The Pueblo were also hunters. They hunted various animals such as foxes, badgers, wolves, mountain lions, mountain sheep, deer, and antelope. They hunted rabbit and buffalo most of all. They hunted rabbit because there were a lot of them and large buffalo because it provided a good supply of meat.

Transportation The Pueblo Indians didn’t use horses or canoes for transportation. To get from place to place, the Pueblo Indians traveled on foot. So their only transportation was by walking.
