Frames Mr. Toth

Frames The structural foundation of the car. Gives the car its’ strength.

Two Types Separate body and frame. Uni-body Camaro SS

Separate Body and Frame Used in: Trucks Large Cars Vintage Cars

Advantages: Passengers are separated from driveline and road noise. Usually a stronger structure.

Disadvantages Heavier More expensive

Separate Body and Frame

Body and Frame The chassis is built separately from the body and the two are brought together later on in the assembly line. The body is isolated from the frame by rubber bushings.

Platform Chassis A subgroup of the separate body and frame. A flat pan with a tunnel added for strength is fitted with a separate body. Used by the Volkswagen Beetle

Platform Chassis

Unit Body or Unibody Generally used on smaller cars. Body is the frame. Usually lighter. Some builders use tubular “subframes”. Others use stamped steel “tubs”
