Swiss MLS10: in-situ validation of recycled hot asphalt mixtures Prof. Dr. Manfred N. Partl Head of Road Eng./ Sealing Compoents Lab., Empa Switzerland TRB AFD40 Meeting XX.01.2017

Background Wearing course AC11S: 60% RAP + BRW (rejuvenator) High percentage RAP asphalt concrete? Wearing course AC11S: 60% RAP + BRW (rejuvenator) Base course ACT22S: 75% RAP + BRW (rejuvenator) Promising lab results required in-situ validation AC11S +RAP 55cm 6cm 4cm AC11S (ctrl) ACT16S Granular 0/40 ACT22S (ctrl) Granular 0/40 ACT22S +RAP 55cm 8cm Medium bearing capacity subgrade

Background Load. length = 4.2m Load. length = 4.2m AC11S (ctrl) ACT16S Granular 0/40 AC11S + RAP ACT22S (ctrl) Granular 0/40 ACT22S +RAP 65kN super single channelized 5000 passings/h 18km/h No temp. control 4.2m Granular 0/40 2 loading locations, simultaneous loading of pav. with and without RAP (control)

Background 20m 15m AC11S AC11S + RAP ACT22S ACT22S + RAP MLS10 loading (4.2m) ACT22S ACT22S + RAP

Construction (July 2016) Loading start 10/10/16 Loading end 01/12.16 AC11S + RAP ACT22S + RAP ACT22S + RAP cut waste material ACT22S + RAP ACT16S Tack coat joint tape AC11S + RAP joint tape cut AC11S + RAP AC11S + RAP AC11S Loading start 10/10/16 Loading end 01/12.16 1Mio loads in 2 pavements (7.1Mio ESALs)

Preliminary results: rutting Higher rutting in pavements with RAP

Preliminary results: surface cracking AC11S (control) AC11S + RAP More surface cracking in pavements with RAP ACT22S (control) ACT22S + RAP

Findings 1 Mio loads have been applied in two pavements with and without RAP (control) ACT22S After 400k loads (2.8Mio ESALs), pavement with RAP shows slightly higher rutting and transversal surface cracks than the standard pavement AC11S After 600k loads (4.3Mio ESALs), pavement with RAP shows higher rutting and transversal surface cracks than the standard pavement
